EU introduces online age verification app that protects children and teenagers

The European Union has introduced an app to confirm the age of online users, setting the standard for verification technology, as more and more countries consider laws banning teenagers from social media.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed this Wednesday that this app is a solution to protect children. 

"Online platforms can easily rely on our age verification app, so there are no more excuses, Europe offers a free and easy-to-use solution that can protect our children from harmful and illegal content," said Von der Leyen. 

The software was originally introduced as a way to prevent children from accessing obscene or harmful content online.

Several EU member states, Spain, Portugal, France and Greece, have announced plans to adopt measures banning teenagers from social media, citing studies on the sites' addiction and harmful effects on minors.

The tool will require users to show legal identification, such as a passport, during installation and will work on phones, tablets and personal computers. It will also help coordinate age verification requirements across the EU. /CNA
