Japan creates AI-powered robot monk that reads Buddhist scriptures

Japan has unveiled a humanoid robot created with artificial intelligence, designed to bring people spiritual guidance and answer existential questions, all based on traditional Buddhist texts.

The robot, dubbed “Buddharoid,” has been trained on vast amounts of classical Buddhist scriptures, including the most specialized texts. This gives it a “digital mind” that can meaningfully answer personal, philosophical, or spiritual questions.

In Japan, the population is aging and the number of human religious monks is dwindling. Researchers at Kyoto University have aimed to use AI to fill this gap, offering a new form of religious assistance.

AI combined with a realistic humanoid body allows the robot to speak, move, gesture, and adopt traditional meditation or prayer positions in Buddhist temple spaces. It is not simply programmed with fixed phrases like previous robots; it can engage in dynamic conversations with humans.

Unlike previous religious robots (e.g. simulations based on fixed programming or pre-written texts), Buddharoid uses advanced language models that it has learned from Buddhist scriptures, enabling more natural conversations and contextual responses. /CNA
