Europe is developing a social network called "W"

Europeans plan to create their own social network, named "W", as an alternative to the American platform X (formerly Twitter), an initiative that aims to be more secure, transparent and under European privacy and identity rules.

What is "W"?

"W" is a new social networking platform, developed by European innovators and leaders, that is presented as an alternative to Elon Musk's X.

The name W symbolizes “We”, as well as the two “V”s in it, for “Values” and “Verification”.

The platform aims to ensure that every user is verified as a real person, helping to combat fake profiles that spread misinformation.

User data will be stored and processed in Europe, under EU legislation on

Anna Zeiter, a Swiss privacy and technology expert, is one of the project's lead authors.

The project was publicly unveiled at the World Economic Forum in Davos, and is expected to launch a beta version next year, with a full release sometime in 2026. /CNA
