Clashes after Inter match, investigation into referees deepens in Italy

The investigation into refereeing in Italian football is widening, highlighting internal tensions between several key figures.

At the center are Andrea Gervasoni and Luigi Nasca, between whom a clash is reported after the Inter–Verona match in January 2024.

In that match, an episode involving Alessandro Bastoni against Duda was not reviewed by VAR. Another case relates to the Salernitana–Modena match in March 2025, where pressure is suspected over the decision-making for a penalty.

The investigations also include allegations of a referee appointment system called the “Rocchi system.” In this context, matches such as Bologna-Inter and Inter-Milan are mentioned, where there is suspicion of influence on selection.

Colombo and Dover are among the referees named in these cases. The investigation is ongoing and could have consequences for future sports justice.
