Red cards, World Cup surpasses the figures of the past two editions. What is the record?

The 2026 World Cup is witnessing a significant increase in the number of red card penalties from the early days of the tournament.

The trend was noticed in the opening match between Mexico and South Africa, where three dismissals were recorded.

So far, after the first 38 matches, referees have issued a total of eight red cards. This figure is twice as high as the entire 2018 tournament in Russia and 2022 in Qatar.

Current statistics show greater strictness in the application of the regulation by referees.

Currently, about 1/3 of the entire competition has been played. Meanwhile, the historical record for the highest number of exclusions is held by the 2010 World Cup.

In that edition, which took place in South Africa, a total of 28 red cards were recorded.
