The 2024/25 Championship season in England ended with drama at both the top and bottom of the table. Leeds United were crowned champions of the English second division after a last-gasp victory at Plymouth, while Burnley, who had also secured promotion to the Premier League a few weeks earlier, finished in second place on equal points.

Leeds' 90th-minute 2-1 win over Plymouth gave Daniel Farke's side the title, leaving Burnley second on goal difference, despite the latter also winning 3-1 at Millwall. Both teams finished the season on 100 points, but head-to-head results and goal difference favoured Leeds.

In addition to the top two places that guarantee direct promotion, four other teams will fight for the final place that guarantees promotion to the elite of English football through the play-off stage. Sheffield United and Sunderland had secured participation in this stage before the final week, while the race for the remaining two places remained open until the end.

Coventry City, under the guidance of coach Frank Lampard, secured a ticket thanks to a 2-0 victory over Middlesbrough. Bristol City, where Anis Mehmeti also plays, managed to get an important point against Preston in a match that ended 2-2, thus closing the four teams participating in the play-offs.

Thus, the semi-final pairings have been determined, with Bristol City challenging Sheffield United, while Coventry City plays Sunderland.

The winners of these duels will face off in the final at Wembley, where the third team to be promoted to the Premier League for the 2025/26 season will also be determined.

At the bottom of the table, Luton Town have been relegated, having been relegated to League One next season after just two years in the Premier League. The team failed to avoid relegation, finishing bottom of the table. Plymouth and Cardiff City were also relegated, having also failed to secure their place in the top flight.

With the regular season over, attention now shifts to the crucial play-off stage, where the final team to join Leeds and Burnley in English football's elite will be determined.
