FIFA expelled from the World Cup, referee found dead

Dutch referee Rob Dieperink has died at the age of 38, news that has been officially confirmed by the Dutch Football Association.

The cause of death of the renowned referee was not yet specified in the statement given to the media. The passing comes just a short time after he was excluded by FIFA from the list of referees for the World Cup, following an arrest in April by British police in London on suspicion of sexual assault.

The investigation by authorities in the UK was closed without any legal charges due to lack of evidence, and Dieperink himself stated that he had been unfairly accused. The incident occurred before a Conference League match, where he was a delegate.

Dieperink had a long career since 2012, refereeing in the Eredivisie, as well as serving as a VAR referee at Euro 2024. His last professional challenge was in a friendly just a few days before he passed away.
