Big step as a coach, Forlan will manage two national teams at the same time

Diego Forlan has been appointed interim coach of Uruguay following the departure of Marcelo Bielsa. The president of the Uruguayan Football Federation, Ignacio Alonso, confirmed that the former striker will lead the national team until March 2027.

The decision came after Uruguay's disappointing performance at the World Cup, where the team was eliminated in the group stage with just 2 points from matches against Spain, Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia.

The federation has not made a long-term decision due to elections later this year. Forlan will take charge of matches in September, October and November as part of preparations for the next cycle towards the 2030 World Cup. He will also coach Uruguay's U20s at the 2027 South American Championship.

Forlan has limited coaching experience, having previously managed Penarol in 11 games and Atenas de San Carlos in 12. As a player, he was the star of the 2010 World Cup with 5 goals and won the tournament's Ballon d'Or.
