Study: Europe's climate crisis threatens food system, health and economy

Climate extremes are intensifying Europe's vulnerability to extreme weather caused by climate change, which is becoming increasingly clear.

In 2025, fires destroyed over a million hectares of land, the largest area ever recorded. Drought conditions affected over half the continent, leaving 70% of Europe's rivers with annual flows below average and threatening water security.

Marine heatwaves were widespread, affecting 86% of the ocean waters surrounding Europe, with the Mediterranean and Norwegian Seas experiencing the most severe conditions. Sea surface temperatures reached new highs, further disrupting marine ecosystems.

"The pace of climate change demands more urgent action. With rising temperatures, widespread fires and drought, the evidence is clear; climate change is not a future threat, it is our present reality," says Samantha Burgess, Strategic Climate Lead at ECMWF.

Mauro Facchini, Director of the Copernicus Unit at the European Commission, emphasizes on this issue that maintaining our reliable and state-of-the-art data of our Earth system is vital to make informed policy decisions in a rapidly changing climate, helping to preserve the environment, food systems, security and the economy. /CNA
