New study: Increasing forest area not necessarily a positive indicator for the

Although it appears that the world's forests are "expanding" their areas, this is not necessarily a positive indicator for the health of the ecosystem, according to a new international study published in Nature Plants.

The analysis included more than 31,000 tree species globally and found that many forests have become more homogeneous, meaning they are dominated by a few fast-growing tree species.

Meanwhile, slower-growing and more ecologically robust tree species, often endemic and located in the tropics, are at risk of extinction.

The species that replace the original trees have thinner leaves, less dense wood, and are less resistant to climate change, drought, storms, and disease. This makes forests weaker and less sustainable in the long term.

Even though there are more trees in number or area, the ecological quality of forests is deteriorating, species diversity is being lost and the natural balance is being destroyed.

The loss of biodiversity in forests weakens resilience to climate change and can negatively impact the ability of forests to capture carbon from the atmosphere.

Replacing native species with fast-growing ones could weaken the ecological structure, making forests more vulnerable to destruction. /CNA
