Increasing cases of domestic violence/ Sociologia Dojçe: The problem

During the last three days, 3 serious cases of domestic violence have been registered, which have raised the alarm that this phenomenon is taking on large proportions in the southeast.

Sociologist Maria Dojçe analyzes the main factors and causes that lead to the escalation of family conflicts into physical violence, mainly against women.

"The three cases that we have been informed about by the media are very serious. The events are related to each other and they show that Albanian society is still in transition, where we have not yet consolidated the role of family members in the family. From a patriarchal family where men dominated and the figure of the wife, mother, woman was subordinate, we have moved to another stage of the development of society, in a society based on human rights where women also try to take their place and position in society.

The increase in the role of women in the family and society and the increase in her independence has created a deadlock in the relations within the family. From a society where the man had superiority due to the tradition inherited from the generations, today we have a family where the woman stands by the man. The change in the status and role of the husband and wife within the family is thought to be one of the causes that generates violence in the family.

One of the other causes that leads to violent conflicts within the family, where the victims are mainly women, but also other family members, is the massive use of narcotic substances, which, in addition to young people, is also involving the middle-aged. Another reason that these individuals, in extreme conditions, undertake brutal actions such as the burning of the 31-year-old by her ex-husband.

One of the other reasons that affects the increase in cases of domestic violence is the economic crisis, the inability of male heads of families to find a job and provide income for the family.

The transition from a patriarchal society to a liberal society based on human rights I think is the main reason for the conflicts that lead to physical violence within the family."

In the assessment of the sociologist, domestic violence is not just an issue that belongs to institutions, but is an issue of the whole society.

"I think that the reaction of the institutions in the reported cases of violence has been correct and the abused women have been helped either with protection orders or even with economic and social assistance. The problem remains the lack of denunciations from abused women because the cases that are denounced receive support. Women still find it very difficult to report cases of domestic violence and seek protection orders. More than reported cases, hidden, unexposed cases remain a concern."

During the last three months, there have been 25 requests addressed to the court of Korça for immediate protection orders, of which the court has accepted 13 of them.

Police statistics on cases of violence

For the period from 01.06.2024 to 31.08.2024 at the district level, according to Article 130/a of the Criminal Code, 46 cases of violence in family relationships with 46 perpetrators were recorded.
According to law 9669, 68 citizens requested to be provided with a protection order. Korçë Police Station for the same period, according to Article 130/a, recorded 18 cases, with 23 perpetrators.
