How old are the buildings where Albanians live? The houses of 1981-2000 dominate

In the last two decades, it has not been difficult to see construction sites in Tirana, the panorama of which gives us the conviction that most of the inhabitants live in buildings that belong to recent years.

But, based on the data presented by INSTAT on inhabited dwellings according to the year of construction, part of the Census, some important trends are observed.

The graph points out that the majority of Albanians live in buildings built between 1981-2000. More than 270,000 occupied dwellings belong to this period, making it the decade with the highest number of residential constructions.

In second place, with about 200,000 dwellings, is the period 2001-2010, which shows a significant increase in housing construction after the year 2000, a period associated with rapid urbanization and economic growth after the transition years.

For the latest periods, 2011-2015 and 2016 and later, a lower number of occupied dwellings is observed, with around 60,000 dwellings in total, indicating a slowdown in the pace of construction or high migration.

On the other hand, older housing, before 1980, constitutes a smaller percentage of the occupied housing inventory. Only about 40,000 dwellings date from before 1960, indicating that the oldest buildings occupy a small part of the inhabited space in Albania today./ Monitor Magazine
