Births in Albania decline/ 7.4% decrease, 1000 fewer babies

The number of births in Albania has suffered a significant decrease of 7.4% for the second quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year.

INSTAT reports that the natural increase is positive, due to the fact that there has been a decrease in the number of deaths. And although with a decrease from last year, Tirana has recorded the highest number of births, with 1,982 babies, and the capital results in having the largest natural increase, which is calculated according to the birth-death ratio.

In this quarter, Gjirokastra has registered the lowest number of births, with only 74, this is explained by the emigration of young people to this region. While the region of Korça not only has a significant decrease in the number of births, but also has an excess of the number of deaths. In this quarter, the number of deaths has been 226 more than the number of births in this region.

In the first half of 2025, a total of 9,322 births were registered (4,340 in the first quarter and 4,982 in the second), compared to 10,325 births in the same period in 2024.

This represents a significant decline, with nearly 1,000 fewer babies. Almost all regions of the country have recorded a decrease in births.

Regarding the natural increase (birth-death), only 4 districts are positive, which means that in this second quarter there were slightly more births than deaths, while in 8 other districts the natural increase of the population is negative, as the number of deaths is higher than the number of births. /CNA
