Europe is heading towards demographic decline, with its population expected to fall by 11.7% or 53 million people by 2100, according to a new forecast from the European Statistical Office.

The decline will not begin immediately, as the EU population is expected to grow slightly, reaching a peak of 453 million in 2029.

But then there will be a long period of decline, with the population falling below 400 million by the end of the century. At the same time, the number of young people and people of working age will decrease, while the proportion of people over 80 will more than double.
