Report: Ocean temperatures at record levels in March, a risk to climate

Ocean temperatures reached record levels last month, according to the European Copernicus observatory, a fact that strengthens scenarios of the return of the El Niño phenomenon, which is coming to add to the effects of anthropogenic climate change.

The increasingly likely return of El Niño in the second half of the year is causing concern among climatologists that humanity is moving towards new extreme high temperatures.

The ocean surface temperature was 20.97° Celsius in March, excluding the polar regions, a tenth of a degree below the record set in March 2024. And the average continues to rise in April, according to observatory data.

The most recent El Niño event, in 2023 and 2024, made them the warmest two years on record. The cyclical phenomenon is a periodic, large-scale increase in water temperature in a part of the Pacific Ocean that has a ripple effect on global climate for several months. /CNA
