US surgeons who transplanted a modified pig kidney into the body of a brain-dead patient said Wednesday that the organ is still working after 32 days — a major step in the race to combat the donor shortage. organs.

The latest experimental procedure is part of a field of research that aims to advance cross-organ transplants, using human bodies that have been donated for scientific purposes.

There is currently a list of 103,000 people waiting for an organ transplant in the United States, and of those, 88,000 need a kidney.

"We have modified the genes of a pig kidney that has been working for a month in the human body," said Robert Montgomery, director of the Langone Transplant Institute.

"I think it is an important step at this point, which provides security for starting studies even on living human bodies" .

Montgomery first transplanted a modified pig kidney into a human body in September 2021, followed by a similar procedure in November 2021.
