A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals increasing cases of leprosy in the US, particularly in Florida, where it is becoming endemic in some areas.

In 2020, 159 new cases of public health concern were registered. Professor Schwartz emphasizes the need for reporting and contact tracing to prevent transmission of the disease, which can cause blindness and paralysis if left untreated.

Leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, is caused by bacteria and has historically been a challenge for medicine, but modern treatments make a cure more possible.

Why is it spreading?

Scientists are still uncertain about the cause of leprosy outbreaks in parts of the US, with no clear source for the recent cases in Georgia and Florida.

While leprosy was previously spread mainly through close contact with animals or international travel, studies show that recent cases may have been caused by other factors, including genetics and the immune system of individuals.

Tracing the source and spread of infection is difficult because of the latency of symptoms, while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports new cases unrelated to traditional risk factors.
