A drug for Alzheimer's is considered an important discovery

Scientists have hailed the discovery of a drug that is believed to slow the destruction of the brain by the disease known as Alzheimer's - the most common form of forgetfulness.

However, the drug lecanemab has little effect and its impact on the daily life of people affected by this disease is being discussed.

According to studies, the drug has slowed disease progression by a quarter over 18 months of treatment.

The drug is also believed to work in the early stages of the disease, so many people may go through several stages until they identify it.

Lecanemab attacks harmful proteins that build up in the brain of a person who has Alzheimer's.

It is an antibody – like those the body makes to fight viruses and bacteria – that is designed to teach the immune system to clear harmful proteins from the brain.

Currently, people suffering from this disease are prescribed a therapy only to manage the symptoms, but none of them fight it.

The new study included 1,795 volunteers, diagnosed in the first stage of the disease.

They were given doses of the new drug every four days.

US regulators are analyzing these data to decide whether to approve the drug for widespread use.

Its creators - the pharmaceutical companies Eisai and Biogen - plan to apply next year for approval of the drug in other countries./REL
