Rama reacts to protests: Extremism seeks power starting with the road

Prime Minister Edi Rama reacted again this Wednesday regarding the citizen protests against the government, which have been ongoing for more than 2 weeks.

Through a long post on social media, Rama raises allegations of extremism among citizens, as he points out, certain groups are trying to intimidate others for the sake of the homeland.

Full reaction:

ONE OF THE VALUABLE LESSONS OF HISTORY is that extremism seeks power by starting with the road.

A group decides it has the right to intimidate others for the sake of the homeland. Shouting replaces argument. Lukunism replaces dialogue. Intimidation is presented as activism and the public lynching of traitors as God's justice on behalf of the people.

This is how extremist movements acted in pre-war Europe and they still do so today whenever and wherever they can, exponentially increasing the pressure on democratic space thanks to the uncontrolled avenues of the internet.

Anyone who doesn't think like the crowd becomes the target of massive online bullying, insults, threats, public lynching, and organized smear campaigns. The goal is not debate. The goal is silence. To create a climate where people choose to remain silent, not because they have nothing to say, but because the cost of speaking becomes too high.

Historians agree that street terror begins with seemingly "small" acts, with insults, intimidation, public humiliation, marches and roadblocks, and targeted attacks on individuals, while the digital crowd multiplies fear and pressure.

The video below from downtown Tirana last night speaks for itself and is another mirror where anyone can see democratic citizenship in the vocabulary of this protest, from the rostrum of insults, to the choruses of lynchings and the screams of the marchers. /CNA
