New drug prices/ Shehu: Policy that harms public health and fuels corruption

Democratic MP Tritan Shehu has reacted regarding the new list of medicine prices.

Through a post on social media, Shehu, even as a doctor by profession, describes this act as a policy that harms public health and fuels corruption in the country.

"The new drug price list aims to cover the financial collapse of the HII by significantly increasing the presence of medications of unsafe origin for citizens."

The reduction in prices for patented drugs and those of serious companies, without negotiation and without transparency, is removing safe medications, certified by the EMA and FDA, that circulate in EU countries from the market.

Instead, citizens are increasingly being offered medications of uncertain origin, without international certifications, which are not allowed to circulate in either the EU or Kosovo.

Medicines are not ordinary goods. Their main parameter is clinical effectiveness and safety, guaranteed only through international certifications, for Europe by the EMA.

The financial collapse of the HII cannot be corrected by further undermining drug safety and putting the lives and health of citizens at risk.

Today, the reimbursement fund remains around 100 million euros, forcing citizens to pay around 60% out of pocket, while in the EU this burden is around 10%.

The amendments I submitted to increase the health budget and restore the legal obligation for EMA/FDA certification were defeated, adding to the emptying of the reimbursement list of safe drugs and filling it with "fake drugs", both imported and domestically produced.

"This policy harms public health and fuels corruption," Shehu writes. /CNA
