EU Ambassador Gonzato: EU stands by Albania in preserving biodiversity

EU Ambassador Silvio Gonzato stressed today that the European Union stands by Albania to protect the country's irreplaceable biodiversity, such as its coast, rivers, forests, lagoons and mountains.

In a meeting with the Minister of Environment, Sofjan Jaupaj, Gonzato emphasized that EU4Nature, the EU project for nature protection, aims to assist Albania in establishing environmental standards.

“The EU4Nature project can play an important role in preserving Albania’s biodiversity. However, Albanian authorities must also do their part to cope with the increasing pressure on protected areas. Moreover, the project is helping the country move forward towards EU environmental standards. But protecting nature goes beyond policy alignment; it requires concrete actions on the ground,” said Gonzato.

According to Gonzato, this step is crucial at a time when tourism is expanding and pressure on the environment and biodiversity is increasing. /CNA
