A team of biologists and geologists have revived organisms trapped in Arctic ice for 40,000 years in central Alaska.
The life forms in question are ancient microbes, some of them up to 40,000 years old, extracted from the walls of the Permafrost Tunnel Research Center, a permafrost study site near the city of Fairbanks that extends more than 100 meters into the frozen ground beneath Alaska.
By carefully thawing these frozen microbes, researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder observed that, after a few months, they reawakened and formed active colonies.
"These are not dead samples by any means. They are still very capable of harboring robust life that can break down organic matter and release it as carbon dioxide," the scientists say.
Published in the journal JGR Biogeosciences, the findings could help us understand more about the impact of the rapid thawing of the planet's permafrost on Earth's climate. /CNA
