German waters alone contain around 1.5 million metric tons of discarded weapons, mainly from the two world wars in the 20th century.

An underwater submersible has spotted crabs, worms and fish thriving on the surfaces of World War II explosives thought to be toxic to marine life.

At a former weapons storage site in the Baltic Sea, scientists found more creatures living on top of nuclear warheads than on the surrounding seabed.
