Picasso's painting of his muse sells for 8 million euros at auction in Paris

An unknown portrait by Pablo Picasso of one of his girlfriends has been discovered after it was put up for sale at auction in Paris with a reserve price of 8 million euros ($9.5 million).

Titled "Bust of a Woman with a Flowered Hat," it depicts Dora Maar, a French photographer, painter, and poet who was Picasso's best-known muse.

Painted in oil, the colorful work measuring 80 x 60 centimeters is estimated at around 8 million euros, a reserve price that could rise significantly, according to auctioneer Christophe Lucien at the Parisian auction house Drouot.

It was painted by Picasso on July 11, 1943, and was purchased in August 1944 by a French collector who is the grandfather of the current owners.

The painting shows Maar with a melancholic but harmonious face, wearing a colorful flowered hat. Maar was Picasso's most important model and muse, with around 60 works based around her. /CNA
