Scientists discover that Earth's northern hemisphere is darkening faster

Scientists, through a new discovery, have shown that the northern half of the Earth is darkening faster than the southern half, reflecting less sunlight back into space and absorbing more solar energy.

A new study based on more than two decades of satellite data shows this small but consistent shift in the planet's energy balance.

Research points to cleaner air, melting ice, and small but significant changes in clouds as the main drivers of this change.

Oivind Hodnebrog, a senior researcher at the Norwegian Centre for International Climate Research, said the findings show there has been a change in the amount of solar radiation coming in versus heat radiated back into space.

"What we find in this paper is that it is increasing more in the Northern Hemisphere than in the Southern Hemisphere," the researcher said.

Researchers said several factors are driving the change. One of the biggest is cleaner air.

Researchers say this darkening trend may not be permanent. How this change evolves will depend on future greenhouse gas emissions, levels of aerosol pollution and how the climate system responds to the additional heat./CNA
