A special and valuable monument/ The Church of ''Saint

Përmet is one of the areas with an early tradition of Christianity documented from the Middle Ages. This fact is seen in a number of Orthodox churches built on its territory during the 11th-19th centuries.

We can mention some of these objects that enjoy the status of cultural monuments, such as those of: ''Prophet Ilia'' in Buhal, built in the 11th-12th centuries; ''Saint Mary'' in Kosina, built in the 12th century; ''Saint Sotir'' in Tremisht, built in 1560; ''Saint Mary'' in Pazar in Përmet, built in 1600; ''Saint Kollit'' in Përmet, built in 1747; ''Saint Premtes'' in Përmet, built in 1776; ''Saint Kollit'' in Lipë, built in 1786; ''Saint Mary'' in Leusë, built in 1812; ''Saint Thanas'' in Leshicë, built in 1812; ''Saint Kollit'' in Argovo, built in 1812; ''St. Elias'' in Buhal, built in 1814; ''St. Constantine and Helena'' in Ogren, built in 1859; ''St. Mary'' in Benja, built in 1789 and ''St. Mary'' in Okdunan.

Meanwhile, among them we can single out the church of ''Shën e Premtes'' in Përmet, built in 1776. Located in the southern part of the city, near the stream, it consists of a nave, altar, narthex and a porch. Such a fact is also evidenced by the inscription written in Greek, on a stone slab placed on the wall of the porch, in the northern part of the church. ''Ilia Hrisi. 1776 April 20 this temple was built at the expense of all the friends. The instigator and founder was Leondi, economy, pope Celo. And Fili and epitrop Leonti", it reads.

The Church of ''St. Friday'' is a three-nave basilica, where on the columns that divide the interior space and its walls, spherical caps are supported on which cylindrical vaults are raised. In this case, the central nave stands out, the dimensions of whose cores and domes are larger and higher, creating a more voluminous space . The nave, which has dimensions of 12.90 x 10.70 m, is separated from the altar by a carved wooden iconostasis that rests on the two columns of the eastern part. This walnut wall is thought to have been made sometime in the early 19th century, by Dhimitri, a master woodworker from Konica. The iconostasis is gilded and polychrome, carved with floral, zoomorphic and human motifs.

Ai ndahet në tre breza me dy radhë ikonash dhe dallohet si i vetmi i këtij lloji në Shqipëri, që ka pesë dyer. Të tilla janë dyert e bukura në qendër të tij dhe katër dyer të tjera në të dy anët e ikonostasit. Ndërkohë pjesa e altarit përbëhet nga bema, absida gjysëmrrethore, protezisi dhe diakonikoni. Nga jashtë absida ka formë poligonale dhe është ndërtuar me gurë të skalitur, që zbukurohet nga një sërë harqesh të larta.

Në pjesën e sipërme ajo mbyllet me një kornizë gurësh të vendosur në formën e dhëmbëve të sharrës. Kurse në anën perëndimore të naosit ndodhet narteksi i cili i është shtuar kishës në një kohë më të vonë. Ai dallohet nga një tjetër teknikë ndërtimi dhe mbulohet nga një çati e drunjtë dhe pa tavan. Po kështu, gjatë pjesës veriore të kësaj faltoreje është vendosur edhe një hajat i hapur, i përbërë nga harkada të mbështetura mbi dy pilastrat e mureve dhe kolona prej guri. Ky ambient mbulohet me qemer cilindrik, ndërsa dy kontraforte janë ndërtuar në pjesën e jashtme të tij, në të dy anët e hyrjes kryesore.

Kisha e ‘’Shën e Premtes’’ është ndërtuar me gurë shtufi të lidhur me llaç gëlqereje dhe mbulohet nga një çati dyujëse me rrasa guri e cila përfshin edhe hajatin nën flegrën e saj. Vetëm pjesa e poshtme e murit lindor është punuar me gurë të skalitur njëlloj si absida. Po kështu, me pllaka guri është shtruar edhe dyshemeja e kishës dhe hajati, në të cilin ndodhet edhe hyrja kryesore e kishës. Ndërkohë me material druri janë realizuar edhe froni despotik, stolat e besimtarëve dhe tirantat që lidhin kolonat e kupolat me njëra-tjetrën, si dhe me muret e kishës. Ky objekt është pikturuar në vitin 1808 me afreske nga Tërpo Zografi.

Sipas historisë së ikonografisë shqiptare, ky piktor do ta niste veprimtarinë e tij në vitin 1782, kur së bashku me të atin, Kostandinin, pikturojnë afresket e kishës së ‘’Shën Gjergjit’’ në Libofshë. Më pas në vitet 1782-1783, ata, do të pikturojnë në manastirin e Kseropotamit në Malin Athos, si dhe paraklisin e ‘’Shën Anargjirëve Kozma dhe Damian’’ në Voskopojë. Po kështu, Tërpo Zografi, ka pikturuar në vitin 1805 edhe kishën e manastirit të ‘’Shën Mërisë’’ në Vodicë të Beratit. Kurse në vitin 1806, ai realizon afresket e kishës së ‘’Fjetjes së Shën Mërisë’’ në Lubonjë të Kolonjës.

“This temple of Saint Friday was painted, at the expense of the Christians, during the time of the all-merciful bishop, the saint of Korça, Mr. Joasaph, at the time when the parish priest Saqelari Kir Pano and the cartophilax Kir Papa Zoto were parish priests, when Mr. Dhimitër Stefani was the caretaker, in September 1808. By the hand of Terpo Zograf, son of Kostandin Zograf, from Korça”, was written in the inscription located on the western wall, inside the nave, in the church of ''Saint Friday'' in Përmet (12). The fresco with the inscription in question no longer exists because it was destroyed in November 1962, by the flood caused by the overflow of the stream (13). Meanwhile, the frescoes restored later, today decorate the side walls of the nave, the arches, the vaults and the domes of the church. They feature various scenes with themes from the Old Testament, the New Testament, saints, etc.

The Church of "Shën e Premtes" in Përmet was declared a cultural monument in 1963 (15). Meanwhile, this building functions not only for local Orthodox believers but is also open to numerous visitors. Thus, the black and white contrast created by the walls and roof is complemented by the green color of the cypresses located at the entrance to the courtyard. Meanwhile, the skillfully executed frescoes, the unique iconostasis and the special architecture make this church an enviable attraction of cultural tourism./CNA
