Rockefeller: “God taught me that everything belongs to Him…”

A story about the power of wealth that forgives and the life that is reborn from gratitude.

John D. Rockefeller, the name that embodied the height of economic power and the symbol of the era of American industrialization, remains today the richest American who ever lived. A figure who built his fortune stone by stone, with iron discipline and an insatiable thirst for control and success. At 25, he owned one of the largest oil refineries in the United States; at 31, he had become the world's oil tycoon; at 38, he commanded 90% of the refined oil in America; and by 50, he was unquestionably the richest man in the country.

Every decision, every step, every connection he made was calculated to serve a purpose: building an empire. But beyond the splendor of wealth, at the age of 53, life began to speak to him with another voice, that of illness and pain. His body began to break down, he was overcome by pain, he lost his hair, and he bowed down to an agony that no price could buy. Gripped by a weakness that stripped him of all power, he ate only soup and crackers, without sleep, without smiles, without meaning in life. His doctors gave the bitter prediction: he would die within a year.

But in the gloom of that waiting, he woke up one morning with an illuminating feeling, an awareness he had never had before. He realized that wealth had no value beyond this path, that nothing he had accumulated could accompany him into eternity. And then, Rockefeller chose to change. He called his lawyers, accountants, and administrators and announced a decision that would transform not only his life but also the history of humanity: his wealth would be put at the service of people, of those who had less, of those who suffered, of science and healing.

Thus was born the Rockefeller Foundation, one of the greatest works of modern philanthropy, which would later contribute to the discovery of penicillin, the advancement of research into malaria, tuberculosis, diphtheria, and many other diseases.

But perhaps the greatest miracle was not what he did for the world, but what happened to him. The moment he began to give, his body began to come back to life. The pain subsided, his smile returned, and the lost energy began to shine again. Where medicine had thrown up its hands, the impossible happened: Rockefeller, who seemed to be about to close his eyes at the age of 53, lived another 45 years, reaching the age of 98.

He lived to experience the greatest lesson, that happiness comes not from possessing, but from giving; that the greatest blessing is not in having, but in sharing. In his final years, Rockefeller would recount in his diary:

“God taught me that everything belongs to Him and I am just a channel to fulfill His desires. My life has been a long, joyful journey, filled with work and play. I left my anxiety behind, and God was good to me, every day.”

This is the journey of a man who descended from the pinnacle of power to know the depths of the soul, who understood that true power is that which heals, forgives, and restores life, not only for others, but also for himself.
