Ash Wednesday/ The 40 days of Catholic Lent begin

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the 40 days of Lent for Catholic believers, a period where the focus is on helping the poor and practicing self-restraint.

Starting today, February 18th, until April 2nd, there are 40 days of prayer, solidarity, and fasting that symbolize the 40 days that Jesus fasted in the desert.

Catholic Lent ends on Maundy Thursday, April 2.

Holy Thursday of Easter is one of the most important days of Holy Week in the Christian calendar. It commemorates several fundamental events from the life of Jesus Christ, which occurred the day before His crucifixion. During Catholic Lent, meat is not allowed on every Friday.

As for fasting, it is obligatory on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On these days, only one meal per day is allowed.

Catholic Easter is celebrated on April 5, 2026.

While the Great Lent of Orthodox Easter in 2026 begins on February 23 (Clean Monday) and ends on April 11 (Lazarus Saturday), with Holy Week continuing until Orthodox Easter on April 12./CNA
