Zelensky seeks face-to-face meeting with Putin to end war

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on Thursday for a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the nearly four-year war.

He said this a day after the meeting that US special envoy, Steve Witkoff, held with Putin in Moscow.

United States President Donald Trump called the talks between his envoy and Putin "very productive," but American officials still vowed to impose sanctions on Moscow's trading partners.

Zelensky later revealed that he had spoken on the phone with Trump, who said he could meet with Putin "very soon."

"We in Ukraine have repeatedly said that finding real solutions can be truly effective at the level of leaders," Zelensky wrote on social networks.

"It is necessary to determine the timing for such a format and the range of issues to be addressed," he added.

The Ukrainian leader said Thursday morning that he planned to hold "several" talks during the day, including with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, as well as French and Italian officials.

"There will also be communication at the level of national security advisers," Zelensky added.

"The main thing is that Russia, which started this war, takes real steps to end its aggression," he concluded./ REL
