The United States is offering a $5 million reward for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators of the assassination of Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio.

This was confirmed on Thursday by the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken.

In addition to the $5 million reward, Blinken also announced that there will be a $1 million reward for information leading to the identification or location of any individual who holds a key position in the group responsible for the criminal event.

"The United States will continue to support the people of Ecuador and work to bring to justice individuals who seek to undermine democratic processes through violent crime," said the US Secretary of State.

We recall that Villavicencio, a former lawmaker and anti-corruption journalist, was killed in Quito on August 9, less than two weeks before the presidential elections.

The Ecuadorian police have arrested six suspects, whom they say are all Colombians who belong to criminal groups./ CNA
