Authorities in Venice have adopted new measures to limit the impact of overcrowding on the city, writes the BBC.
The new rules include banning loudspeakers and limiting the size of tour groups to 25 people.
These measures are part of efforts to preserve the city's historic quarter, which attracts millions of tourists each year.
Earlier this year, Venice introduced a €5 daily entrance fee for visitors after banning cruise ships from docking in the 2021 quarter.
In 2019, the city with a population of around 250,000 welcomed more than 13 million tourists, a number that is expected to be exceeded in the coming years after the downturn caused by the pandemic.
Venice has faced an exodus of local residents due to fears of the impact of mass tourism.
Civic association Ocio reported that the historic quarter has about 49,000 beds for tourists, more than the number of beds available for residents.
The new measures came after UNESCO warned last year that Venice could be added to the list of world heritage sites at risk due to the impacts of climate change and mass tourism.
Efforts to address these problems include an anti-flood system and measures to reduce the impact of tourism./ CNA
