According to reports from Turkey, Russia and Ukraine will sign this Friday an agreement to resume the export of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea. The office of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will also attend the signing ceremony in Ankara. Negotiators from Ukraine and Russia had discussed export modalities with the mediation of the United Nations and Turkey in Istanbul in recent weeks.
Ukraine is one of the world's largest exporters of wheat and other grains, so the war in Ukraine has massive implications for food security around the world. The blockade of Ukrainian ports by the Russian Black Sea Fleet during the war of aggression has caused grain prices to rise sharply around the world and caused a food crisis.
Dozens of ships are blocked and in the warehouses and silos of the port of Odesa, at least 20 million tons of grain are waiting to be exported.
Ukraine is among the most important suppliers of cereals worldwide. According to the figures of the UN Food Organization in 2021, Ukraine was the third exporter of barley and the fifth exporter of wheat./DW
