Russia reopens gas pipeline to Europe

Russia on July 21 restored critical gas supplies to Europe via Germany, reopening the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, ten days after the pipeline was shut down for maintenance.

However, gas deliveries are expected to be smaller than the capacity of this pipeline.

After rising tensions over Russia's war in Ukraine, German officials had expressed fears that the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which had been shut down since July 11 for regular annual maintenance, might not be reopened at all.

The operator of the gas pipeline, AG, said that on the morning of July 21, gas deliveries resumed, but the amount of supplies will take time to increase.

The head of Germany's grid regulator, Klaus Mueller, said that Russian state company Gazprom has announced that deliveries on July 21 will be about 30 percent of the pipeline's capacity.

Nord Stream 1 is the main source of Russian gas for Germany and accounts for about a third of the gas supplies of Europe's largest economy./REL
