Journalists' rights organizations in Turkey are warning that independent Turkish media face fines and arrests after reporting critical of the authorities' response to the February earthquakes. Many experts and journalists say that the situation will worsen while the next presidential elections will take place in the country in May.
In Turkey, local media outlets such as Jin News were at the forefront of reporting on February's deadly earthquakes. But reports by journalists criticizing the slow response of the government and emergency services caught the attention of the authorities.
To bring charges, prosecutors are now relying on a new legislation, according to which misinformation on social media is considered a criminal offense and punishable by prison. With the presidential election, some journalists say things could get worse.
"I don't think that the government's tyranny towards the press will decrease, it will even become more difficult with the election process ahead", says Sema Caglar, journalist at "Jin News".
As the death toll from the earthquakes in Turkey exceeds 50,000 and millions of people are still homeless, analysts suggest the government may try to control or suppress any critical reporting on the government's response./VOA
