Trump accused of asking staff to delete security videos in Florida classified

Donald Trump ordered employees at his Florida resort to delete security videos while he was under investigation for keeping classified documents, US prosecutors said Thursday as they expanded their case against the former president and accused a second member of his staff of helped to hide the documents.

Special Prosecutor Jack Smith has filed three new charges against former President Trump, bringing the number of charges to 40. The maintenance worker at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort, Carlos De Oliveira, was charged with conspiracy to obstruct justice by helping Mr. Trump delete the documents.

Mr. De Oliveira, 56, told another employee at the resort where Mr. Trump lives that "the boss" wanted the Florida property's security videos deleted after the Justice Department subpoenaed him for an investigation.

Prosecutors also accused Mr. De Oliveira of lying to the FBI during an interview, claiming he was not involved in moving boxes of classified documents to Mar-a-Lago.

"I didn't see anything," De Oliveira told agents, according to the indictment.

Mr De Oliveira's lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The allegations were made public hours after Trump said his lawyers met with Justice Department officials who are investigating his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden.

"This is nothing more than a desperate and ongoing effort by the Biden family and the Department of Justice," Mr Trump's campaign said in a statement.

Donald Trump is the first former US president to face criminal charges and has already been indicted twice this year, once in New York over payments to a porn star and another time over classified documents.

The accusations have not damaged Mr. Trump's position as the main candidate in the Republican race to challenge President Biden in the 2024 election./ Voa
