Donald Trump called former Republican lawmaker Liz Cheney, one of the Republican voices most critical of him, a "war hawk" and suggested she wouldn't be so willing to send US troops to war if she herself were put in front of the gun barrel. Ms Cheney responded by calling Mr Trump a "cruel, unstable man who wants to be a tyrant".
In an appearance late Thursday in Arizona with former Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson, Mr. Trump was asked what he thought of Ms. Cheney campaigning against him. The former Wyoming lawmaker has been a vocal opponent of former President Trump since the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol and has expressed support for Democrat Kamala Harris in this year's presidential race, attending her recent campaign rallies.
Former President Trump called Mrs Cheney a "crazy person" and added: "But the reason she couldn't stand me is she always wanted to go to war. If it was up to her, we'd be in war with 50 different countries".
The former president went on to say that "She's a radical war hawk. Let's put her in a rifle, nine barrels in front of her, and see how she reacts."
"It's easy to call for the deployment of 10,000 troops on the enemy's doorstep from a chair in a beautiful building in Washington," Mr. Trump said.
Lawmaker Cheney responded Friday in a post on Platform X, saying “This is how dictators destroy free countries. Those who speak against them threaten them with death. We cannot trust our country and our freedom to a small, vindictive, cruel, unstable man who wants to be a tyrant."
Earlier, after Vice President Harris' campaign team and other critics of Mr. Trump on social media condemned his comments, former President Trump's campaign officials said he was "talking about how Liz Cheney wants to send the sons and daughters of America at war, despite the fact that it itself has never been at war"./ VOA
