Trump: It will be difficult to fund New York if Mamdani becomes mayor

US President Donald Trump has said he would have a hard time sending federal funds to his hometown of New York City if the leading left-wing candidate, Zohran Mamdani, is elected mayor of America's largest city this week.

"It's going to be hard for me as president to give a lot of money to New York, because if you have a communist running New York, all you do is waste the money you're sending there," Trump said in a television interview.

Polls show Mamdani ahead of his main rival, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, heading into Tuesday's vote. Mamdani won the Democratic primary, while Cuomo came in second. 

Meanwhile, Trump has deployed National Guard troops to Democratic-led cities as part of a crackdown on crime, while seeking to remove funding from jurisdictions that limit their cooperation with federal immigration authorities. /CNA
