US President Donald Trump said a few hours ago that he had ordered the Pentagon to begin planning for possible military action in Nigeria, while adding to his accusations that the government is failing to curb the persecution of Christians in the West African country.
The president also warned that he would immediately halt all aid and assistance to Nigeria.
"If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the United States will immediately halt all aid and assistance to Nigeria and may enter that now disgraced country, with guns drawn, to completely eliminate the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrific atrocities. I am hereby directing our War Department to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just as the terrorist bandits attack our beloved Christians!" Trump posted on social media.
The warning came after Nigeria's President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, earlier on Saturday, rejected Trump's announcement that he was designating the West African country as a country of particular concern due to its alleged failure to curb the persecution of Christians.
In a statement on social media on Saturday, Tinubu said the characterization of Nigeria as a country intolerant of religions does not reflect the national reality. /CNA
