Medieval tower in Rome partially collapses/Worker seriously injured

A medieval tower in the heart of the Italian capital, near the famous ruins of the Roman Forum, partially collapsed this Monday morning during renovation work on the structure.

A worker was seriously injured in the incident.

Firefighters used a mobile ladder to reach the top floor of the Torre dei Conti. Three workers were rescued, while one remained trapped inside the structure, according to Corriere della Sera.

During the rescue operation by firefighters, another part of the tower collapsed, sending a cloud of debris into the air. Firefighters who were on a mobile ladder quickly descended when the additional collapse occurred.

The Torre dei Conti was built in the 13th century by Pope Innocent III as a residence for his family. The tower was damaged in an earthquake in 1349 and suffered subsequent collapse in the 17th century.

Italian media report that Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli immediately went to the scene./CNA
