Powerful tornado hits Brazil/ 6 dead and over 400 injured

A powerful tornado hit the southern Brazilian state of Parana, killing six people and injuring more than 400 others, state officials said on Saturday.

The tornado, which reached speeds of more than 250 km/h, destroyed dozens of homes in Rio Bonito do Iguacu, a town of about 14,000 inhabitants, and prompted the government to declare a state of emergency in the affected region.

"It destroyed everything. It destroyed the city, the houses, the schools. What will happen to us?" said one resident.

Five of those killed were adults and the sixth was a 14-year-old girl.

State officials said in a statement that at least one person was missing hours after the tornado touched down. The number of missing people is expected to rise./CNA
