Secret documents revealed yesterday that Berlin has begun making plans for how it can help deploy up to 800,000 NATO troops - including Americans - to Ukraine as Russia continues to step up its nuclear strikes, according to The New York Post”.
"Operation Deutschland" is a 1,000-page plan to prepare Germany for the possibility of a World War III scenario.
According to German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the top-secret documents are said to detail specific buildings and infrastructure to be protected - so they can be used by the military, how businesses and civilians should prepare in the event of security threats. added.
They also suggested that Berlin was preparing 200,000 military vehicles across German territory should the alliance be asked to join Ukraine's efforts, although further details were kept classified.
"Germany has also advised citizens on ways to prepare for the worst by increasing their self-sufficiency through mechanisms, including installing diesel generators or even wind turbines," according to the report.
The alarm is not contained in Germany. Sweden and Norway have also recently released pamphlets and literature instructing citizens on how to prepare if the Ukraine War conflict erupts in their countries.
The growing concern comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin formally reversed the Kremlin's nuclear strike policy on Tuesday, announcing that Moscow could now use nuclear weapons to respond to non-nuclear, "conventional weapons" attacks.
Although Berlin has been criticized for perceived reluctance to support Ukraine's war from 2022, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Tuesday that the country "would not allow itself to be intimidated" by Putin's shift in nuclear policy.
"Putin is playing with our fears. "He didn't start doing this 1,000 days ago when Russia invaded Ukraine, he started in 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea," she said.
"Germany, in particular, made the mistake then, especially politically, of allowing itself to be afraid of this - and above all, of not listening to its partners, especially our Eastern European partners, who made it clear at the time that we should not rely on the Kremlin's promises," said Baerbock.
"We need to invest in our security and defense," she added.
The policy change was in response to another major development in the war prosecution this week, the long-awaited US decision to allow Ukraine to fire longer-range American-made missiles at Russia – eliminating a former "safe space" that Russia enjoyed about 190 miles from the Ukrainian border.
This move – as well as Germany's reported decision to create a World War III plan – was prompted by Russia's decision to ask North Korea to send at least 10,000 troops to help fight Ukraine.
