Drought hits the Greek islands/ Lack of rain, with catastrophic consequences
The island of Santorini

Drought has hit some of Greece's most popular destinations and favorite islands. The water shortage comes in the middle of the summer season, for a country that attracts millions of visitors each year, and when tourism keeps the country's economy alive.

Local meterologists say that the last year with abundant rain in the Aegean was 2019. Last year was the third year in a row with below average rainfall.

Islands that are among the most popular destinations in Greece have remained without water. Several Cyclades islands, the well-known islands of Mykonos and Santorini, or even the other islands of Andros, Tinos, Naxos and Ios have been affected by drought.

On islands where meeting the needs of tourism is the only priority, empty tanks add to an already difficult situation. Mykonos is a typical example.

Drought is not the only problem. The Aegean islands have seen an increase in tourism in recent years, but also an increase in water consumption. A typical example of the gradual increase in water consumption is the island of Santorini.

Apart from tourism, the drought will hit farmers the hardest, as they will have to import more food products. Also, livestock farmers will be affected. If it doesn't rain, there is no vegetation and the lack of water is increasing year after year, the pressure on the authorities./ CNA
