Russia carried out drone strikes across Ukraine overnight on Saturday, hitting an energy facility in the Sumy region in the country's northeast, officials said.

Ukrainian mobile units defending the country from drone attacks and air defense units shot down 24 of 27 drones launched over 12 regions of the country, the Ukrainian air force announced.

The operating company of the energy network "Ukrenergo" announced that energy facilities in the Sumy region were damaged, forcing an emergency shutdown for industrial consumers in the city of Sumy. Repair crews were working to restore power.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, or details of damage caused in other regions.

Since March, Russian forces have intensified bombing of Ukraine's energy sector, damaging most hydroelectric and power plants and blacking out areas across the country.

Ukrenergo announced further planned outages across the country due to shortages in sufficient energy production and imports.

Ukraine's energy system was hit in the first year of the attack by Russian forces that began in February 2022. The energy system lost almost half of its production capacity due to missile and drone attacks over the past four months./ VOA
