Protests in Sri Lanka

At least 55 people were injured in the violent protest that engulfed Sri Lanka's capital, Colombo, this Saturday.

According to local authorities, three of them were wounded by gunshots, writes CNN.

Regarding the protest, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe also reacted, where he announced that he is ready to resign.

"To ensure the continuity of government including the safety of all citizens, I accept the best recommendation of party leaders today to pave the way for a multi-party government," Wickremesinghe tweeted.

The capital of Sri Lanka has been engulfed in protests this Saturday due to the economic crisis in the country. Protesters have attacked government buildings, including the presidential residence in Colombo.

Citizens demand the resignation of the president, considered responsible for the economic crisis that has gripped the country, with record inflation, shortages of fuel, electricity and food.

The island of 22 million inhabitants is facing its worst economic crisis since independence in 1948. /CNA.al
