The European Parliament said on Monday it has started a procedure to lift the immunity of two of its members following a request by Belgian justice investigating a corruption scandal between the European Union and Qatar.

Two sources close to the investigation told the Reuters agency that the two MEPs are Belgian Marc Tarabella and Italian Andrea Cozzolino.

"Following a request from the Belgian judicial authorities, I have launched an urgent procedure to lift the immunity of two members of the European Parliament," said Parliament President Roberta Metsola on Twitter.
