Zelensky: The next meeting between Ukraine and the EU will be held in Kiev

Ukraine and the European Union will hold a meeting in Kiev on February 3 to discuss financial and military support, President Volodymyr Zelensky's office said in a statement released on Monday.

President Zelensky discussed the details of the high-level meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in his first phone call of the year, the statement said.

"The parties discussed the expected results of the upcoming Ukraine-EU meeting to be held on February 3 in Kyiv and agreed to intensify the preparatory work," said the statement issued by the Ukrainian president's office.

The leaders discussed the supply of "appropriate" weapons and a new $19 billion financial aid program for Ukraine. According to the statement, Mr. Zelenskyy requested that the first installment of this aid be sent this month.

Last month, the European Union cleared the way for the so-called "mega-deal", which provides for huge financial aid to Ukraine, including the imposition of a 15 percent tax on global corporations to support Kiev.

The move followed an impassioned appeal by President Zelensky that the 27-nation bloc's internal disputes should not hinder its support for Kiev./VOA
