"All parties must respect international law"/ EC President, phone call

The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, had a telephone conversation with the President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, today.

In a post on "X", Costa said he called for calm and protection of civilians. He also stressed the need for all parties to fully respect international law.

"Today, in my phone call with the President of Iran, I called for calm and restraint, the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, and the need for all parties to fully respect international law," Costa wrote in a statement shared on X.

He expressed regret over the loss of lives during the conflict, saying he had called on Iran to stop attacks on countries in the Middle East.

"To reduce tensions, I urged Iran to stop unacceptable attacks on countries in the region and to engage positively on the diplomatic path, particularly with the UN to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz," he wrote.

Costa reiterated the commitment of EU member states to support peace efforts in the region.

"There must be room for diplomacy. The EU stands ready to contribute to all diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and find a lasting solution to end hostilities, while addressing the broader security concerns posed by Iran ," the EC leader wrote. /CNA
