US media: Trump is ready to end the war without opening the Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump has told his aides that he is willing to end the military campaign against Iran even if the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed and leave a complex operation to reopen it for a later date, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing Trump administration officials.

The WSJ reported that Trump and his aides had concluded that a mission to reopen the critical waterway, now a sticking point, would prolong the conflict beyond his four-to-six-week timeline.

Instead, the US president has decided to focus on striking Iran's missiles and navy before exerting diplomatic pressure on Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the WSJ report said.

The report comes as governments around the world find themselves in a scramble to ease the burden of rising fuel prices while also looking at energy conservation. Nearly a fifth of the world's crude oil and natural gas passes through the Strait. 

On Monday, Trump also threatened to destroy Kharg Island, Iran's main oil export hub, if a peace deal is not reached. He said U.S. troops would destroy all of its power generation plants, oil wells and Kharg Island, and possibly all of its desalination plants. Experts have said that destroying civilian infrastructure could constitute a war crime. /CNA
