The Taliban bring back public executions

The Taliban administration of Afghanistan has sentenced a person to death, executing him in public.

It is the first public execution since the militant group seized power in Afghanistan last August.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on December 7 that the group's top officials took part in the execution of a man from Injil district in Herat province. He allegedly admitted to stabbing a man to death and stealing his motorbike and phone during a robbery five years ago.

Sekretari i Përgjithshëm i Kombeve të Bashkuara, Antonio Guterres, ka shprehur “shqetësim të thellë” lidhur me ekzekutimin në publik, tha zëdhënësja e tij, Stephanie Tremblay.

“Qëndrimi ynë nuk ka ndryshuar. OKB-ja është kundër dënimit me vdekje”, tha ajo dhe shtoi se OKB-ja bën thirrje për rikthimin e moratoriumit për dënimet me vdekje në Afganistan.

The Taliban took control of Afghanistan last August, as international troops withdrew from the country after two decades.

The militant group has restricted the rights of women and girls in terms of work and education.

Most of the world's countries do not recognize the Taliban-led government because of concerns that the militants will not follow through on promises to respect human rights. However, on March 17, the UN Security Council voted to establish official ties with Afghanistan.
