Spain destroys criminal gang that exploited Ukrainian refugees

Spanish police announced that they have broken up a criminal gang that ran three illegal tobacco factories in the country, in which Ukrainian refugees were working in harsh conditions.

The Spanish authorities announced that the raids were carried out in three different locations and that 27 people were arrested. According to them, the factories were able to produce more than half a million packs of cigarettes per day, which were sold throughout Spain and abroad.

Police said the Ukrainians, who had fled the Russian invasion of their country, were living "crowded" in makeshift shelters inside the factories.

The police statement said the Ukrainian workers involved in the operation lived in harsh conditions, worked long hours and never left, as some had entered Spain illegally.

Meanwhile, according to police, the ringleaders are reported to have laundered large sums of money and lived in luxury in the resort town of Marbella.

The action is part of the ongoing efforts of the Spanish authorities to combat illegal activities, including money laundering and smuggling./REL
